How the Kerala gold rate works
Every morning the All Kerala Gold & Silver Merchants Association publishes one statewide board rate for 22-carat (916) gold. Every jewellery shop in Kerala starts from this same number — what differs between shops is the making charge and how they value old-gold exchange. The rate follows international gold and the USD–INR exchange rate, which is why it can move sharply even when nothing changes locally.
Buying for a wedding? Read our guide on making charges, GST and HUID hallmarking — negotiating the making charge usually saves more than timing the market. Sending money from the Gulf for the purchase? Check today's AED→INR rate too: the effective price of gold for an NRI is exchange rate × board rate.
FAQ
What is one pavan?
1 pavan (sovereign) = 8 grams. A typical Kerala wedding involves 50–100 pavan.
Why is the shop bill higher than the board rate?
The bill adds making charges (3–25%) and 3% GST on gold + making. The board rate is only the metal price.
